As is customary with any car manufacturer, for the New Year a new or updated model is unveiled. Toyota was not left out, and unveiled its new and updated models. One of the models unveiled at the New York Auto Show was the RAV4 SUV with a hybrid unit on board, becoming one of eight hybrids from Toyota.
Design of the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
To say that the RAV4 has undergone a complete redesign is no way to describe it, it's more like a facelift and an update to the rear of the SUV. The front end has changed compared to the previous model. The grille near the emblem became smaller and narrower. The part of the grille below the badge also became longer, in the previous model it was wider and not as long. Lower part of RAV4 bumper is open, for good air flow to the engine.
The front bumper is now open and larger, giving the Toyota RAV4 a sharper shape at the front. Behind the bumper the front headlights have also changed, becoming elongated to the centre of the grille and slightly narrower than previous models. On the sides, at the bottom of the bumper, the designers have positioned the fog lights.
It's no surprise to connoisseurs that Toyota and Lexus take parts of cars, wheelbases, engines or other things from one another. This time also the RAV4 showed that it took some parts of the base from the Lexus NX crossover. As for the hybrid setup, it was taken from the NX300h.
The side section is reminiscent of the previous RAV4 model, the mirrors have turn signal indicators and heating, and the shape of the doors remains the same. The underside and above the wheels are accentuated by a black plastic trim that adds to the rigour of the SUV. The rear stops have become more elongated and stretch over part of the rear wings.
Rear of the RAV4 Hybrid, the boot lid has changed not much, becoming more comfortable and larger. The step above the bumper, which was always in the way when loading bulky loads, has been removed. The lower right corner of the boot lid has a Hybrid label, indicating the presence of a hybrid unit.
The rear lights are positioned on the boot lid, are elongated and clearly visible even from a long distance and are based on LED optics. The boot lid glass is more streamlined and convex. The windscreen wiper is located on the glass, and above the glass is a spoiler with brake light repeaters. Just above the spoiler, the roof of RAV4 Hybrid has an antenna for radio in the form of a shark fin. The roof rack mounts are located on the roof.
According to the manufacturer, RAV4 Hybrid will be available in two options XLE and LTD.
As for the Hybrid's colours, there will be a choice of colours available:
White;
Black;
Blue;
Grey;
Silver.
The body dimensions of the new SUV will be:
RAV4 Hybrid's length is 4,600 mm;
width is 1844 mm;
height of the SUV is 1674 mm;
wheelbase is 2659 mm;
ground clearance of 160 mm.
With these parameters, the RAV4 Hybrid's minimum turning circle is 4.6m, given that the unladen weight is 1792kg and the kerb weight is 2245kg. The volume of the fuel tank as well is not particularly large, only 70 litres, as part of the journey relies on the hybrid unit. The LTD model will be equipped with 18? chrome wheels, while the XLE model will have 17? alloy wheels.
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid interior
When a new car enters the market, car enthusiasts are always interested in the interior, because outside is one thing, but inside comfort and design is something else entirely, which catches the eye and is felt when driving the car.
The front fascia of the RAV4 Hybrid differs slightly from its predecessor. There is a striking 7-inch touchscreen audio system in the middle, which also serves as a monitor for the rear view camera. The display also shows navigation maps. Ventilation holes are located on each side of the display, and below the display there is climate control panel and Start/Stop button. It's not much of a surprise to customers, but Toyota says it will be standard on the RAV4 Hybrid.
Toyota designers decided to take into account all the wishes of existing RAV4 owners and improved both the front fascia and the quality of the car's interior trim material. The front fascia is lined with leather, as are the interior and door inserts.
The cabin will be available in the following colours:
Grey;
Black;
Walnut;
Brown and Black.
The steering wheel, made in the style of Toyota, leather-covered and slightly flattened at the top and bottom, in the middle is located Toyota logo and airbag, just next to located buttons control music, mobile phones and other functions. The steering wheel can also be adjusted to suit the driver, which is important for SUVs.
Behind the steering wheel is the instrument cluster. In the middle of the dashboard is a 4.2" display, providing information on the RAV4 Hybrid's status and functions. The display shows driving economy, charge and battery status, as it's a Hybrid. Automatic transmission, engine status, temperature and other information.
On the right hand side is the speedometer, fuel level, maximum speed of 220 km/h. On the left side is the tachometer and the engine temperature. The tachometer is labeled with the modes of operation, battery charging, economy drive and full throttle instead of the usual engine revolutions.
On the left side under the RAV4 control panel there are buttons to adjust and control mirrors. To the right of the steering wheel, under the climate control panel placed buttons for selecting driving style, eco mode, heated seats, USB charging and regular cigarette lighter. It should be noted that for RAV4 Hybrid handbrake and gearbox lever are well thought out, so that it was easy to switch and at any time to tighten the handbrake.
The seats are also made comfortable and sporty, with a lateral streamline design that gives a comfortable seating position when driving long distances. The RAV4 has an armrest between the front seats for storing small items. The rear seats are just as comfortable, the armrest is folded down and can easily seat three passengers. There is enough space between the front and rear seats for a taller person to sit down.
Safety of the RAV4 Hybrid SUV
The safety of the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is on par with that of a manufacturer like Volvo. Engineers are introducing more and more technology with each new model, thus improving driver and passenger safety. The RAV4 Hybrid features Toyota's latest development, TTS (Toyota Safety Sense), which is able to prevent collisions by keeping the vehicle at a safe distance when driving and manoeuvring. Thanks to a large number of sensors and cameras, the driver of the RAV4 is provided with the most accurate information about the vehicle and the situation on the road.
The airbags, which Toyota installs as standard, are also standard, as are the seat belts. Both RAV4 hybrids will be equipped with a blind spot monitoring system, capable of alerting the driver to the vehicle in front of them
As for the cameras, it's not just the rear view, but they are installed all around the perimeter of the RAV4. By selecting the all-around view function on the main display, you can see the car from above and, thanks to the camera projection, what's around the vehicle.
The RAV4 XLE package will include cruise control, which is not available in the LTD package. But the LTD has an automatic light control feature that can turn the headlights on and off at the right time, for some unknown reason, the automatics were not installed on the XLE model.
Overall, this is not yet a complete list of auxiliary systems and security systems that will be installed on the RAV4 Hybrid.
RAV4 Hybrid features
Not least, and most interestingly, is the specification of the hybrid SUV. The RAV4 Hybrid is powered by a 2.5 litre DOHC four-cylinder engine. The power of this unit is 112 hp, as we remember it is a hybrid model, but unlike the standard electric motor, the RAV4 Hybrid has two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear. Together, both deliver 194bhp and 206Nm of torque.
Coupled to these engines, the RAV4 has an automatic variable transmission ECVT, which electronically and automatically transmits torque to the RAV4's four wheels, with priority to the front-wheel drive. The rear wheels are automatically engaged when slippage begins or the load on the front wheels increases. As the Hybrid box is variable, engine power is used when braking and the excess charge is transferred to recharge the batteries, in addition, when driving economically, the electronics also recharge the batteries, as indicated by an indicator on the dashboard.
The driver can choose between three driving modes: Sport, ECO and EV, the latter involving driving on the electric motor only; according to the manufacturer, in this mode the RAV4 Hybrid is capable of travelling a kilometre or a half at the lowest speeds.
Fuel consumption in the RAV4 Hybrid is 6.92l/100km when driving around town, 7.60l/100km in the city and 7.1l/100km in the combined cycle. Compared to a conventional RAV4 where the consumption is 10.7 l/100km around the city, 8.1 l/100km outside the city, the combined cycle of 9.41 l/100km, we can say that the Hybrid is quite economical and quickly justifies the cost of fuel.
Acceleration of hybrid model from 0 to 100 km / h is 8.3 seconds. As you can see, only the petrol engine will be available and the same volume. The main competitors of RAV4 will be Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi, which also will present their hybrid models in the new year.

The price of Toyota RAV4 Hybrid will depend on a complete set, thus the retail price for XLE will make $28370, for a complete set LTD the price will make $33610.
