2016 Toyota RAV4 hybrid problems

2016 Toyota RAV4 hybrid problems

Problems:

  • The price looks overpriced, as do the service charges.

  • A short (general Toyota) interval between maintenance is only 10,000 km.

  • The suspension is stiff, does not like bad asphalt and primer.

  • The back row is cramped.

The trunk is pleasing to the eye, but check the spare wheel niche: the full-size one relied only on 17-inch wheels and ate 40 liters of usable volume.

Toyota RAV4 hybrid 2016 motors problems:

Gasoline engines are very sensitive to fuel quality (frequent flushing of the throttle valve is inevitable) and contaminated oil (change every 10,000 km or more).

The two-liter (3ZR-FE / FAE, 146 hp) has flattering reviews, but the reputation is spoiled by an unsuccessful timing chain drive with an unpredictable resource.

Engine 2.5 (2AR-FE, 180 hp) is ranked among the best in the modern Toyota lineup and is classified as eternal: the resource is estimated at 400,000-500,000 km. The main thing is to keep an eye on the timing drive and change the oil.

2016 RAV4 hybrid gearboxes problems:

Of all the transmissions, only the variator from the large K111-114 family is controversial. Weaknesses are common – rapid wear of individual elements plus structural intolerance to off-road modes. At the same time, Toyota variators are for some reason considered the most perfect, in urban conditions they work well. The resource is small – about 150,000 km. The six-speed mechanics are good: no massive problems have been identified.

The six-speed automatic Aisin U660E / U760E is sometimes included in the ratings of the most unkillable, and sometimes blamed for its low resource. With quiet modes and good care, it lives up to 150,000 km without breakdowns.

Four-wheel drive is realized by means of an electromagnetic clutch, which cannot be frequently and for a long time strained in mud or snow.

RAV4 hybrid operational issues:

  • The silent blocks of the front levers, bushings and stabilizer struts, wheel bearings, brake pads and discs wear out quickly (30,000–70,000 km). In pre-styling cars, check the rear levers; if they have split silent blocks, they will have to be changed immediately.

  • Failures of control electronics on all motors are frequent; the wiring to the lambda probes quickly turns sour.

  • Intractable squeaks in various places: driver’s seat, spiral contact (cochlea) of the steering wheel, plastic interior parts.

  • Condensation may drip from the sun visor mountings (dealers suggest installing an additional seal).

  • In the slush, the electric rear door is capricious.
