Toyota compact crossovers are designed to carry up to 5 people and several bags or suitcases. The volume of the trunk on the RAW 4 depends on the generation. The rear row of seats folds down to increase usable capacity. Transformation of the passenger compartment allows you to carry large-sized items. The door opening line close to the ground makes loading and unloading easier.
Trunk dimensions of Toyota RAV4
The first model RAV4 appeared in the production program of the Japanese concern in 1994. The first generation car was based on the chassis of Celica GT-Four, belonged to the category of SUV 4 and had permanent drive on all wheels. The model name is an acronym for Recreation Active Vehicle, indicating a vehicle for active recreation, and the number 4 indicates the transmission of torque to all wheels.
All generations have a body with a luggage compartment combined with the passenger compartment. For loading and unloading, there is a hinged or lift-up door equipped with a glass and electrically operated wiper and liquid nozzle.
First generation (1994-2000)The capacity of the compartment depends on the body type:
on the base 3-door version XA10 volume is only 176 liters, to transport bulky cargo you must remove the rear sofa, not equipped with a folding mechanism;
the 5-door version with extended wheelbase has a trunk volume of 407 liters, the spare wheel is located on the outer part of the door;
After the restyling in 1997, the capacity is 173 and 409 liters, respectively (the spare tire is left outside the door, the mechanism of folding the seat is not provided);
In Soft Top model with a folding roof and 3 doors the capacity was kept at the level of 173 liters.
The car manufacturer was aware of the lack of capacity of the luggage compartment and provided in advance the possibility to install roof rails. Additional plastic trunk with streamlined contours allowed to carry bags or suitcases and had a capacity of up to 500 liters.
Second generation (2000-2005)
Introduced in 2000, the new RAV4 featured a redesigned 3 or 5 door body and a range of upgraded engines with reduced fuel consumption and improved environmental credentials. The base 3-door XA20 had a luggage compartment with a capacity of only 150 liters. The 5-door version has increased volume to 410 liters. When the seat is folded down, the figure was up to 766 liters. In 2003, the interior and exterior renovations had no effect on the size of the vehicle, size and configuration of the trunk (the spare wheel in a trunk remained in the stern of the vehicle).
Third Generation (2005-2013)
In the late fall of 2005, the XA30 generation started to be delivered with a new body, which had an increased width and length. All crossovers were equipped with 5 doors. The spare tire was located in a special niche in the trunk door and covered with a plastic cover, painted in body color.
The trunk had a capacity of 586 liters, and with the folded back sofa the parameter increased to 1752 liters.
The backrests formed a level floor that allowed the installation of large-sized cargoes. There were small niches to store 4-5 liter canisters or small tools. After restyling in 2008, the trunk capacity dropped to 410 liters (with the same dimensions of the interior and body), but with the folded back sofa capacity remained at the same level (1752 liters). After the second upgrade in 2010, the spare wheel was moved under the trunk floor.
Fourth Generation (2013-2018)
Since November 2012 customers began to receive cars of XA40 SUV generation with 5-door bodies. All-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive versions were available. Transmission scheme did not affect the layout and capacity of the cabin and luggage compartment. Storage compartment had a capacity of 506 liters and was equipped with a security curtain. When the rear seats were folded down, it could carry up to 238 gallons. A flat floor allowed to securely fasten a large load. Plastic sheeting with hemispherical projections of rear wheel arches limited cargo volume.
Cars with the same dimensions and body (wheelbase 2660 mm) were also supplied to the U.S. market. The claimed trunk capacity for the U.S. is 1,087 liters, and with the folded seats the parameter reaches 2078 liters. The spare tire on all XA40s is located under the raised floor panel. There is a foam organizer with storage compartments for tools and additional equipment.
Fifth Generation
Since 2018, the fifth generation is available, available with front- or all-wheel drive. The spare tire is located under the trunk floor, and the capacity of the compartment on the XA50 SUV is 580 liters. There are additional niches in the trim to store small items or canisters with oil or water. The rear row of seats is equipped with a backrest, which is folded in proportion of 40:60 or fully, bringing the capacity to 1690 l. There is a roll-up curtain, which closes the luggage from prying eyes. When the seats are folded, the protection is removed.
The Japanese version of the XA50 differs in the location of the steering wheel and the layout of the luggage compartment, which has a capacity of 542 liters. When the backrests are folded down, the capacity reaches 1,650 litres. The use of a hybrid power unit with an extra battery does not affect the capacity. The American version is claimed to have 1062 and 1977 liters capacity, respectively (the body has the same dimensions as the Russian or Japanese models).
