The performance of the electric E-Four all-wheel drive system in hybrid vehicles has improved (total torque at the rear wheels is increased by 1.3 times). In the market, in addition to hybrid versions based on a 2.5-liter engine, a version with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine is also offered.

The completely changed exterior better reflects the off-road qualities of the car: what are only the “square” wheel arches and a developed body kit. The Adventure variant looks striking: tall black roof rails, a special grille, 19-inch wheels with matte black inserts, while in the simpler X and G Toyota trim levels RAV4, 17- and 18-inch wheels are installed. In the initial configuration, you can see the usual analog tidy with a 4.2-inch color multi-information TFT display, and the expensive versions will offer a 7-inch on-board computer display with a digital or analogue speedometer display and other information in a more detailed and high-quality form. The driver’s seat is electric in 8 directions with memory, there is a heated steering wheel, an electric tailgate, a digital salon mirror and much more.

For the market, the RAV4 offers a variety of setup options. The basic version is equipped with a D-4S direct injection gasoline engine – a fairly powerful 2.0-liter unit of the Dynamic Force Engine series (171 hp), it works together with a Direct Shift variator with a mechanical first gear, imitation of sequential gear changes and Sport mode. The THS II hybrid system combines a 2.5-liter engine (178 hp) and an electric component: an auxiliary motor and an electric motor on the rear axle (E-Four system). The maximum power of the installation is 222 hp. There is also a front-wheel drive version without a rear electric motor. In 2020, Toyota introduced a Plug-In Hybrid powertrain. It consists of the same 2.5-liter internal combustion engine, electric motor, lithium-ion battery and a booster-converter, the total system power is 306 hp. It will take only six seconds to accelerate to “hundreds”, while the average fuel consumption is only 2.6 l / 100 km. On pure electric traction, the crossover can travel up to 63 km.

The RAV4’s high driving characteristics are ensured by a fully independent suspension. Almost perfect weight distribution between the axles was achieved: 51% / 49%. The ground clearance is 190-200 mm. The all-wheel drive system with dynamic torque vectoring not only improves stability, but also serves to save fuel – under normal conditions, the crossover is fully front-wheel drive, which eliminates power loss. In hybrid all-wheel drive models, the separate electric motor that drives the rear axle is also switched on only in certain modes, for example, at the start or with poor traction, when cornering, in order to eliminate understeer; the system improves hill climb performance, and with paddle shifters (a first for a RAV4), the driver can downshift to increase regenerative braking and provide more control when driving on hilly terrain. The wheelbase of the RAV4 is 2690 mm (+30 mm). Machine dimensions: 4600 x 1855 x 1685 mm (L x W x H). The RAV4 boasts a more spacious interior: its length has increased from 1820 to 1890 mm, width from 1495 to 1515 mm, and its height has decreased, but slightly (by 10 mm) and is 1230 mm. The RAV4 has a large trunk: 542 liters (1150 with the seats folded down). Its standard length is 1015 mm, and with folded seats it is 1880 mm.

The RAV4 has excellent visibility (mirrors on legs, lowered window line, increased area of ​​the rear windows). The manufacturer notes the opportunity to improve the characteristics of the all-wheel drive by choosing the driving modes; there is a descent assist system. The digital interior mirror allows you to see what is happening behind the car, even if the trunk is full to the roof. Seven airbags, a reinforced body, numerous preventive safety systems, which include a lane keeping system, radar cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, and automatic high beam, are directly responsible for safety.

In the new generation, RAV4 looks very stylish, has sufficient ground clearance, although the entry / exit angles are small. The car has a well thought-out interior, plenty of storage space, a spacious trunk and good visibility.
