Fuel economy of Toyota RAV4The car's fuel filter is one of the main parts of the car. When it comes to fuel quality at the petrol station, it's hard to do without it. Its main purpose is to clean the fuel from all possible particles and water impurities. Let's see how to correctly replace a filter on an SUV Toyota RAV 4.

Where is the fuel filter and when to change it?

The main function of the fuel filter is to filter the petrol from various impurities and contaminants (rust, sand, metal particles, etc.) entering the system. These contaminants may negatively affect the operation of the internal combustion engine and lead to the damage of various engine components.

Unlike previous models, in Toyota RAW 4 III generation the filter element is located in fuel tank inside the fuel module (which performs a kind of shell function where the fuel pump is). Such arrangement is inconvenient because to change the filter, one should firstly take off a fuel tank, then remove a module with a filtering element. When carrying out the replacement work, you must be careful not to damage anything.

According to the service book regulations, the fuel filter must be changed every 80,000 km. However, due to the poor quality of petrol available at petrol stations, experts recommend replacing it every 40,000 km. Dealers recommend having this work performed at specialised service stations, but it is possible to do it yourself.

Before you start work on the replacement, you need to prepare the necessary tools and materials.

Fuel filter replacement work on the Toyota Rav 4

Once all the necessary tools and the filter have been prepared, you can proceed with the replacement. The work involved in replacing the fuel filter must be carried out on an inspection pit or overpass and can be divided into 2 stages:

• removing the fuel tank;

• removal of the fuel module, filter replacement and assembly work.

Fuel tank removal should be carried out in the following order:

• The first step is to depressurise the fuel system. To do this: unscrew the filler cap and disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.

• The next step is to carefully remove the rear of the exhaust system (silencer).

• If the car is four-wheel drive then the driveshaft must be removed.

• The fuel lines and fuel hoses must now be disconnected. In order to prevent contamination of the fuel system, the hoses should be sealed with a clean rag;

• The next step is to unscrew the 6 bolts securing the fuel tank using a head, after which 3 clamps can be removed and the fuel tank can be removed. While doing this, care must be taken not to damage the electric wires supplying the fuel pump;

• Now you can disconnect the power connection terminals and remove the tank;

• After replacing the filter element, reassemble the tank in the reverse order.

After removing the tank, you can proceed to the second step which looks as follows:

• Use a screwdriver to pry open and remove the hatch behind which the fuel module assembly is located. Before removing the module, you must use a hoover to remove any dirt so that it does not get inside the tank;

• Next, unscrew the fuel module fixing bolts using a screwdriver and remove the module easily.

• The fuel module can be divided into several parts: filter element, fuel pump, fuel pre-filter (screen);

• The fuel module can be disassembled easily, just be careful not to damage the plastic clips.

o It is also worth noting that the mesh can be washed in petrol, but if it is heavily soiled then it should also be replaced;

o After installation of the new fuel filter, assembly is performed in the reverse order.

Actually this is the way to replace the fuel filter on your Toyota RAV 4 III generation by yourself.
